Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will accelerate the creation of wealth in the world.
We believe that without any intervention, wealth inequality will dramatically increase.
While we do believe the quality of life will improve for all humans, history has shown that disparities between the rich and the poor result in social conflict and economic instability.
To avoid these downsides caused by AGI, many thought leaders have proposed a version of Universal Basic Income (UBI) that redistributes wealth.
Sam Altman. CEO of OpenAI proposed a mechanism to fund a UBI by taxing both AI companies and land.
Assuming we can fund a UBI, from individuals and organizations like you who care about living in a prosperous and peaceful society, distribution of a UBI becomes a challenge.
Distributing a UBI is challenging because until there is enough money in the "UBI Fund" for everyone in the world to live comfortably,
we need to decide:
1) who to give money to
2) how much money to give each person.
At The Residency, we've decided to start by giving money to ambitious individuals who are creating solutions to improve the quality of life for all.
Scholarships cover their housing, food, travel, and learning. Depending on their location, this ranges from $600-$3,000 a month. That's 3-17x cheaper than attending Harvard.
Our goal is to help residents become financially free: no longer dependent on their parents' money, the government's money, or our money.
Our aim is to serve anyone in the world who wants to better themselves and better the world.
